چکیده

Objectives: Physical activity is known to have multiple beneficial health effects, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, improved insulin sensitivity and cognitive function [1,2]. Sports participation inherently increases the musculoskeletal injury, tendon rupture [3]. Tendon ruptures can be debilitating injuries often require multidisciplinary treatment long recovery periods potentially lead significant reductions in quality life, lost productivity, considerable healthcare costs [4]. Previous studies been focused primarily on specific types and/or patient populations such as high-level athletes military trainees, which not generalizable US population [5-8]. There currently exist no updated, population-based describing incidence demographics all athletic/sports-related general population. The purpose this study was describe contemporary epidemiology athletic most recent two decades using nationally representative sample. Methods: NEISS database, sample hospital emergency departments used ascertain rates various Unites States. All cases from 2001-2020 were reviewed for case narratives select only those with clear diagnosis an acute primary rupture. After exclusions, total n=5,765 unweighted identified, representing national estimate N=235,189 (95% CI=186,833- 283,546). Finally, each narrative manually cross-referenced case’s product codes assign injury mechanism record, involving exercise-/sports-related mechanisms included final analyses. Statistical analysis performed survey data commands Stata/IC, version 17.0 (StataCorp, College Station, TX, US), accounting weights complex designs. rate (IR) calculated chi-square tests compare estimated IRs between groups. Student t-test/analysis variance design-adjusted Rao-Scott chi- square direct comparisons means continuous variables proportions categorical variables, respectively [9,10]. Temporal trends annual percentage changes assessed via regression analysis. Results: An 141,382 individuals CI=107,478-175,286) presented EDs sports-related over period overall 22.9 Person-Years at-risk (PYR) CI=17.4-28.3). Mean age 37.7 years CI=37.0-38.5). Peak occurred fourth decade persons aged 20-40 accounted majority (78.2%). Achilles common half (55.9%). Basketball mechanism, more than one-third (36.6%) lower extremity. For upper extremity tendons, weight lifting most, biceps, rotator cuff, triceps/pectoralis ruptures. Nearly contact sports (46.8%). increased significantly 2001 2020 (AAPC=1.9, 95% CI=1.0-2.8; P<0.01). comparison, non-sports-related also same time (AAPC=4.9, CI=3.7-6.1; P<0.01), fact at higher that (P<0.01). Conclusions: patients especially affect personal team performance competitive differing degrees depending athlete’s particular [11]. paucity athletic/exercise-related This highlights increasing last US, affecting males many different nearly when compared females, generally consistent previous other large [12-16]. demonstrating attributed these part among adults ages [16–18]. Our results show are likely athletics, well growing popularity unconventional sports. [Table: see text][Table: text]

Quinolones and tendon ruptures.

We report two cases of tendon rupture associated with ciprofloxacin. One patient had a complete rupture of an Achilles tendon 6 months after taking the medication.
